AI visibility audit

An AI visibility audit answers two questions: whether AI assistants name you when someone asks about your sector, and why or why not. If it only reviews your website, it is answering half.

Our own figures from vilnux Research, each with its sample.

What it is

It is a measurement of your presence in AI assistants’ answers, followed by a diagnosis of the causes: your site, your entity, external authority and the questions you cover.

It is also called a GEO audit (for Generative Engine Optimization). The difference from an SEO audit is that the outcome is not a list of technical errors, but how often you appear and who appears instead of you.

The four parts it must check

Presence, site, entity and external authority. All four, and read in that order.

PartWhat it checksHow
PresenceHow many of your sector’s questions you appear in, by engine and line of businessAsking real questions and counting, with the margin of error
SiteWhether AI crawlers can read it and whether it clearly says what you do, where and at what priceRobots, indexing, structured data, content
EntityWhether the AI knows your brand is a specific company and does not confuse it with anotherOrganisation data, linked profiles, namesakes
External authorityWhether the pages the AI reads about your sector name youOpening those pages one by one

Why the website is rarely the whole story

Many well-prepared sites do not appear: across 23 sites we audited, the median technical score was 81 out of 100, and that did not translate into presence.

That is the sample of our finding on AI readiness. A readable site is necessary, not sufficient: what decides most answers is the other pages the AI reads.

What it should deliver

How to do it yourself

Write ten questions the way a customer would, ask two assistants three times each, and note how many you appear in and which sites they cite.

Done by hand it has two limits: it is slow and the result changes from one day to the next. So repeat it with the same set of questions each time. The step-by-step is in how to check whether AI cites your site.

vilnux’s free audit

It measures your presence in questions from your sector spread across your lines of business, checks the four parts and tells you who appears instead of you. It takes one or two minutes and needs no signup.

It is a snapshot: it tells you where you start. To see whether what you do works you need to measure the same thing every week, which is what the plans do.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI visibility audit?

A measurement of whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode or Copilot name you for your sector’s questions, followed by a diagnosis of the causes: your site, your entity, external authority and the questions you cover.

What should a GEO audit include?

Your presence by engine with its margin of error, who appears instead of you, the sources the AI reads for your sector and whether they name you, actions ordered by weight, and a section on what it does not measure.

How do I run an AI visibility audit?

Write ten questions the way a customer would, ask two assistants three times each and note how many you appear in and which sites they cite. Repeat the same every few weeks to compare.

Is reviewing my website enough?

No. A readable site is necessary, but in our sample of 23 sites the median technical score was 81 out of 100 and that did not translate into presence. What weighs most is usually what other pages say about you.
