How to measure your brand’s visibility in ChatGPT

To know whether ChatGPT mentions your brand you send it your customers’ questions and count how many you appear in. But before picking a tool, know this: ChatGPT with web search and without it are, for measurement purposes, two different engines.

Our own figures from the vilnux engine, measured through the OpenAI API.

The decision that changes the number

With web search, ChatGPT looks at today’s pages and cites sources; without it, it answers from memory. With the same 90 prompts for one brand we measured 0.0% presence without search and 22.2% with it.

That is our own measurement from July 2026, same brand and same questions. For another brand, in September, the difference was 0.0% vs 5.6%. Neither figure is wrong: they measure different things. What is wrong is comparing one with the other, or a tool that does not tell you which one it measures.

What a ChatGPT tracking tool should tell you

How to check it by hand

Open ChatGPT, turn on search, ask five questions a customer of yours would ask and note whether you appear and which sites it cites. Repeat without search and compare.

Use a new conversation for each question: conversation history changes the answer. And do not ask about your brand (“what do you know about X?”): you always appear there, and it says nothing about whether you get recommended. More in how to check whether AI cites your site.

What makes ChatGPT mention you

With search, the pages it finds at that moment; without it, what it learned in training, which is updated every few months.

So this week’s work shows up sooner in ChatGPT with search (and in Perplexity) than in answers from memory. The levers, in order, are in why AI does not mention you.

How vilnux measures it

Weekly without search and once a month with search, with the questions in the market’s language and the confidence interval on each figure. The two series are stored separately and never averaged together.

ChatGPT is included in the Growth, Pro and Agency plans, alongside Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Copilot (see plans). The full methodology is in how we measure.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if ChatGPT mentions my brand?

By sending it the questions a customer of yours would ask, in new conversations, and counting how many you appear in. For the figure to be useful, repeat each question several times and check whether it uses web search.

Which tool measures visibility in ChatGPT?

Any that sends your questions to the engine and counts the answers, but first ask whether it measures with web search or without, with which model and how many times it repeats each question. vilnux measures both variants separately.

Why does ChatGPT give different results with and without search?

With search it looks at current pages and cites sources; without it, it answers from memory. With the same 90 prompts for one brand we measured 0.0% without search and 22.2% with it.

How long does ChatGPT take to reflect changes?

With web search, as long as it takes to find the new pages; without it, until the next model update, which is usually several months.
