How to track ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics 4
You can measure the traffic that reaches your site from ChatGPT. Since May 2026 Google Analytics 4 groups it in its own channel, “AI Assistant”. What you cannot do is measure all of it: part arrives without saying where it comes from.
Where to see it
In GA4, Traffic acquisition report, default channel group: visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity and other assistants appear in the “AI Assistant” channel.
To see each assistant separately, switch the dimension to “Session source / medium” and filter by chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com or copilot.microsoft.com.
Why you do not see all of it
- Part arrives as “Direct”. If the user copies the link, or the app does not pass where it comes from, GA4 cannot attribute it.
- Cookie consent. If the banner does not tell Google properly, GA4 treats the visit as denied and does not see it. It happened to us on joseredondo.es: from 21 September to 14 October 2026 GA4 received no visits because of a consent mode misconfiguration.
- Being cited is not being visited. You can appear in many answers and get few visits: the answer already answers and the user does not click.
Does it convert better than Google organic?
It depends on the business. In e-commerce the published evidence ranges from −13% to +31% against organic; in services and B2B, the only study with Spanish data finds a median of ×1.87 measured on key events, not sales.
The Spanish study is by iSocialWeb (GA4 of 25 websites, October 2026), and in it AI traffic is 0.4% of visits. The full analysis, with its limits, is in does ChatGPT traffic convert better?. The answer that holds for you is the one in your own GA4.
How to compare it in your own GA4
Compare the key-event session rate of the “AI Assistant” channel with Google organic’s over the last 12 months, and draw no conclusions with fewer than 100 AI sessions.
Use the key-event session rate, not the number of events (one visit can fire several). And check that your key events are business events —a form, a call, a purchase— not navigation ones like a page view: otherwise the ratio means nothing.
vilnux runs this comparison on each client’s GA4 and gives it with its confidence interval; if there is not enough data, it says so instead of giving a number.
